Times are getting tough, and losing the blog all together is becoming more possible and possible as the days go on.
So I'm in a pickle of whether or not I should continue to offer download links for the tracks. What does that mean? Instead of a "right click to download," things will look like this.
Poka - Heartbreaker

What about all the old out of print tracks that arent available anywhere else? You just gonna tease us with those?
I'm not sure what to do. Maybe we can set a limit. For instance, tracks younger than 1 year cannot have download links.
why?????/
your site is awesome! dont stop now!
damm...are u guys gettin heat from labels? http://www.technocolorkids.com
2 things, ask permission or have artists request for their shit to be on your blog. your posts can generate alot of listeners for these artists.
second thing, dont have a save as
agreed with Anon over here. this blog posts stuff from artists most people might have never heard of. if anything, i hate that some people dont understand that they have to give a little in order for their music to be discovered. giving out a sample of their work sometimes only encourages people to find more stuff by them.
sorry you guys are going through this. i think i speak for everyone when i say i'd hate to see this place shut down just because of that.
I take it advertisements are not acceptable? You could have a 120*600 skyscraper ad to the left side of the blog posts.
please keep the download links
aw dudes, please keep the songs download-able
your blog usually makes my day
To be honest, i'd feel different writing the posts if i didnt have anything to offer. Thats one of the main reasons i joined the team: to share my music and to talk with pople with similar tastes as mine.
I wouldnt feel the same buzz or happyness when posting an article.
As for permission, its very hard to get it. Most of the times the artist or label wont allow or not even respond to you.
We can also bend the rules a bit, but its a bit too risky.
well...we still have the "cache" solution...
I love your blog, and I'd really hate to see the downloads go. You guys post the best house music on the internet! If you need help with hosting, I can see what I can do.
http://www.box.net/
For $10 a month, you can get the "individual" package, that has unlimited bandwidth, but 5 GB maximum storage.
Just a thought.
No biggie if there's no "right-click to download". Crafty people who really have to have the track and can't pay for it can always rip the file from the Flash app, for the rest your blog is a great listening and reference resource. Whatever it is, please keep the blog going!
there's always viewing the page source and grabbing the file url from the html.
Yea you can still grab the MP3 link from the HTML, but not everyone knows how to do that.
doesnt advertising leaves good cash?
your blog is one of my favorites, and putting away the downloads would suck, but i also understand the legal, and the cost (not just money)to mantain available the downloads, so itsup to you
omg pleeease dont do that! :( i love your bloooog!
post download links otherwise people will just delete your blog. what is the point of posting tracks you can't download? can do that on itunes or beatport.
I love the blog and it is so inspiring to others who would love to have a blog like ilictronix. You guys have come so far. There are bigger blogs than you that are so big now and established, b/c they stuck through it. They were harrassed all the time, but they stuck through it and they are legend now. This blog shares music that so many people depend on and look forward to. Don't stop now.
Really love this blog, you guys know wsup. Who cares about save as links, I just like to discover new music and hear other people's opinions about said music...
it would suck pretty bad without the links. you guys spread the most beautiful thing in the world - AWESOME KICKASS MUSIC I WOULDN'T EVER FUCKING HEAR ABOUT. killing the links would ruin the whole thing. please, don't do it.
I think it would be best, with things like Fake Blood and this new Vitalic album, to not do links.
But as it was mentioned earlier, things older than a year, or really obscure stuff no one's gonna care about could be linked.
i dont like this change =[
I think your main problem is respect for artists. Artists make their money from record sales and if your giving them away for free then they make no money.
I mean how would you like it if you worked hard on a song, released it and then a blog posted it for free?
If you post NEW songs then maybe just post a 30 second preview with a link to where you can buy the whole song. As for OLD songs, i think its pretty safe to post the whole song.
Hope that helps!
Thanks Louis, that's pretty much the turn I'm deciding to take.
Everything popular within the past 2 years will not have a download link.
That's probably going to be our new policy. I think streaming the track is fine, though.
Considering how little money an artist signed to a big label actually gets off of record sales, I shouldn't think it would matter. Most of the profits come from touring and merchandise.
30 seconds clip sounds good to me, simply because new music( there are exceptions ), well, suck.
*sigh*
Well, if it has to be that way...
Haha hey, it's the price you pay for becoming a prominent blog. we're now on page 1 for a google search of "electronic music blog"
Sounds like a plan.
To me, we are on page 6.
depending on where you live. here in NJ its #10, but I'm not sure where it is in other places
Still though, some artists encourage blogs to post their tracks. Galactik Knights and Leonardus both thanked us on MySpace when we posted their tracks. Then again, they do a lot of free download stuff.
Page 5 for me.
noooo! this blog is awesome the way it is. you introduce a lot of ppl to a lot of new music and the downloadability is wat makes listening to the new artists desirable. honestly if i wasnt able to download the files i prob wuldnt even bother trying to find out more about the artists or their albums. good luck!
kepp the download links!
Keep them! Or at least make the download link less obvious :)
Noooooooo! I've always came to your site to download. To just listen and not download wold really suck! Don't stop!
http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/01/how-to-use-your-gmail-account-as-a-personal-file-server/
Or y'know you could try using googles unofficial free servers.
Untra, it would stream really really slowly.
Don't stop!!! Being able to listen but not download is annoying. I like to download the songs and play them on my ipod before deciding whether to buy or not
Way to suck his dick Prez I thought you were better than that, Louis may make good music but listen to the people not just one person.
Yeah I agree with him. Dont succumb just b/c louis la roche decided to stop onby. His word isn't the holy grail of electronica blog rules!
No, I just happen to agree with Louis the most.
I need to find a balance between staying on air and keeping fans happy. Just giving out mp3's won't help.
I'm not sure to understand the whole dilema about posting the links or not...
When you hear a track through flash player, the file is still downloaded onto Firefox's, Safari's or whatever browser's cache you may use :) a quick search in your temp files and... done !
If this allows blog owners to post w/o having legal issues and still allows us to discover quality music, this is still fine to me !
Guys the blog is great... keep posting the same music! As for the downloading, as long as you are streaming the tunes for us to listen to then anyone can grab them by ourselves...
Use Firefox, download the add-on called DownloadHelper... when you play the song the Download Helper Tab flashes... click on it, save the song to your hardrive. simple.
