I make no secret of the fact that I think this guy is a total crackpot for what I deem ridiculous theories that we are called to the sky because we're made out of 'star stuff'. I also can't stand the way he pronounces 'cosmos'. But despite my prejudice against he and in fact most of the scientific population who make weird theories and preach them as fact before they can possible prove any of them... the guy has some very valid points, and some very deep quotes. My two favorite are
"A still more glorious dawn awaits; not a sunrise, but a galaxy rise. A morning with 40 billion suns, the rising of the milky way."
and
"To bake an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe."
The guy really had an appreciation for the sheer beauty of existence, and all the details and enormities of our universe, and for that I respect him. I really get the feeling we as humans tend to take things like stars, our planet, and our amazing bodies for granted. Everything is beautiful in its amazing irreducible complexity, in that if one single part of our cells had not been created/evolved (whichever you believe), we would not be able to live.
The Symphony of Science project produced an incredible single using clips of Carl Sagan, and the result is an amazing track called A Glorious Dawn. All the tracks are available for free, so I have no qualms about posting them, but if you wish, you may also buy the song on itunes, and on 7" vinyl.
