New SebastiAn....ish

So, SebastiAn has released a brand new track, after a long time without releases. "Oh great!" - you say - "I can't wait to hear it!".

Yeah... You are going to wish he hadn't released this.

In what is the most stupid track of 2010 (and yes, it will be for the rest of the year), its a 13 minute track with 11 minutes of intro, which gets extremely annoying about 3 minutes in and by the end you will have suicidal thoughts and general not-well feeling.

The whole thing is on Youtube (2 parts), and here are the videos.

Be careful, this track is very annoying. Listen to the whole thing at your own risk. We are not held responsable for any physical or mental damage caused to the listeners.

Part 1:

Part 2:

If you managed to listen to the whole thing, you will notice that only the final 2 minutes are any good.
So, our friend Niteshade decided to remove the intro and extend the good part to create this small edit.

SebastiAn - Threnody (Niteshade's No 11 Minute Annoyance Edit) [right click to download]

Enjoy! (if you can)

Pls pray,
Alex.

pretty... interesting, i guess?

Unfortunately, even the last two minutes are the same ultra-grinding, unmodulated, hiccuping stuff he's been doing since Day One. The Kills remix was the last time this trick will ever be thrilling, and he'd better come up with something new fast. Nobody cares anymore.

Speak for yourself Myke. Why fix what ain't broken?

I like the idea of trying to push 'the buildup' as a device to its absolute limits - the ultimate conclusion perhaps being a buildup 4 times longer than the 'rest' of the track - but after such a long hiatus, this is pretty disappointing. The Justice remix of NY Excuse nailed that idea right out the gate. SebastiAn has a good style, and Boba, it ain't broke, but I have to agree with Myke - after all this time, he's not pushing the envelope *at all*? For me, that does make it hard to care.

I have to say this trck is a bit of a bummer though. yet from what ive been seeing, ive only found maily negative comments on this site (Most). everywhere else on Youtube most pepole like it. This is by far the most controversial track this year .

Boba Fettuccini said...

Listen to Smoking Kills and then listen to Momy and then listen to Cheap and Cheerful remix. His tracks are not ALL the same.

Phil said...

Definitely! Not all the same, but this time it feels more like a derivative of his own work.

I really enjoyed the intro. Annoying with style. That stuff works well in albums.

this is based on Krzysztof Penderecki's Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, famous contemporary track with a similar kind of horrific atmosphere. clearly the guy had something in mind when he made this. i sat through the whole thing (lol) and it wasn't as empty as i first thought. not judging it yet :P

Good old evil chord progression at the end.

I personally think this track is genius. Its completley based on an idea, the sample, a tribute to his main inspiration, contemporary music, and whats more contemporary and simply different, in a world of standard 32bar intro - 64bar build - 32bar break - 128bar body etc.. monotonous electro than a track with an 11 minute hair raising cringe worthy build? Fair enough its hardly pushing the boat out in terms of sebastiAns style but there'd be an even worse reaction had he completley reinveted his style and churned out that dub, afro, fidget, tech whatever thats everywhere at the moment. The controversy and comment threads such as this one will gather so much hype for his further productions. All i can say is that despite it being excruciating and almost impossible to listen to, after that kick at the 11min mark all i want to do is hear the album, so conceptually as a preview track, its perfect.

notht hte track name on the download of it (on other blogs) "06 Threnody 1". That would suggest a Threnody 2. It's probably gonna be like a Planisphere.

faggots
you dont get it

Jasone said...

the planisphere no one wanted..
listen you can go on defending this but honestly it is garbage..COMPLETE GARBAGE
theres nothing i hate more than pretentiousness when it comes to music...from what it looks the majority of those defending this are looking at this piece as being abstract...original...creative

NO NO NO

if I was starting out as a musician and I showcased this to record producers they would laugh at me and tell me to stop wasting their time...i'm also positive that if i wandered up to busy p 2 years ago and let him have a listen he'd tell me that i what he had just listened to was a huge letdown of a buildup followed by a shitty walkman recreation

this song actually gave me headaches not only because of its structure but because of how it was produced...this can easily be recreated on TRAKTOR..yes traktor of all softwares by looping, key changing and taking old sebastian distorted chord sample and tweeking with them slightly.

Let DOWN...lets hope Justice doesn't try this shit

I'd love to write a lot about this track. I really would.

I'm pissed.

The End.

What the fuck did I just listen too?
This track is everything that is wrong with electronic music. Just... Everything.

I actually kinda like it, but I am able to endure some pretty nasty shit... Just a note for all the haters: I don't like it cause it's renovating, I just like it cause it sounds like it all makes sense for the sake of the song (you may shoot me now)

@Boba - It says Threnody 01 because I made a 128 mp3 from the 320. I-tunes automatically adds the number 01 to the end of the file name.

Richm - you sir, are a legend. I was thinking the exact same thing. The fact everybody feels limited by the typical structures of electronic music is obviously showing. It's good to see someone with an open mind, and not people so quick to criticise anything that brings about a change. I can definitely see the other side of the story, and i completely understand that. Personally, i don't know many tracks that deliver such an epic blow. Whether you like the drop or not, the suspense before it is absolutely nuts. Yes 11 minutes is.... a long time, but honestly, it's so worth waiting for me. As time passes, the novelty will wear off, to the point i'll def be forwarding it a solid 8 or 9 minutes, but to be fair, he has gone for something new, and i don't think he has failed. Everything sounds better in 320 in comparison to 128, but i still have to say, i wish the vocal samples were used more often. It's not very.. 'advanced' or 'complex' if you will. After waiting for so long for Ed Bangus to get out of this inactivity zone that they've so happily fallen into, I would've loved to see Threnody the exact same way it is now, but the drop to be even bigger. Having said that, it's a preview of what's to come. Perhaps it's just showcasing the fact that it WILL be different. I think Threnody is jsut the beginning, and frankly, I can't fucking wait for his next release. @Boba - you'd be an ignorant fan boy not to think Seba has his specific style which he doesn't really step out of too much. Every single artist has a degree of diversity.. no track is exactly the same, but i think that's a weak arguement to say his music is not ALL the same. @Jasone - I'll agree with you that the Planisphere's were lame.. almost as lame as their U2 and Lenny Kravitz remixes, but besides that, I think you're being overly cynical. The cup is half full, not half empty my friend.

Peace.

Iggz.

is obviously showing how unopen to changge they are**

@Anonymous
hes not talking about mp3 quality, he's talking about song strutcure

Why, SebastiAn, WHY.

this edit is pathetic.
Threondy is a sad love song, a look back to a time when every stupid 18 year old didn't have a blog and Ableton

Boba Fettuccini said...

To clarify, I think it must be said that this is by no means a good song, but it shows that they're at least trying to be more out-of-the-box. Thank you anonymous, for your lengthy comment.

Gavin said...

Why can't some of you guys just say your opinion without being rude? We appreciate what you have to say about the track but you don't need to come off an asshole or insulting people who try to make a bad track somewhat better

Evan said...

I dont hate this because its not a typical song stucture. i hate it because its cacophonous and irritating. If the sebastian name werent attached to it half the people on here wouldnt be defending its supposed brilliance.

Evan said...

and by the way "every stupid 18 year old having a blog and ableton" is what has allowed the genre to take off in the last few years. More people producing drives up quality and competition. Dont be a fag about it

Anonymous said...

who leaked this anyway?

TMLZ said...

my favorite thing about the track? Your all talking about it, and no one is forgetting it. I promise you'll all go listen to the album, just to see if it's all gonna sound like this. Props to RichM and Jason
