Ilictronix Podcast: The Drum & Bass Showcase

Drum & Bass special! Claude and Adam share some of their favorite Drum and Bass tracks and talk about Flying Lotus and Brainfeeder. Adam digs out some Paradise Garage tracks. Claude goes through his personal history with the Drum & Bass genre.

The ilictronix podcast for this week is a whole mish-mash of all sorts. Completely coincidentally, me and Adam both turn on the spotlight to a bit of a contentious genre within the electronic umbrella: Drum & Bass. I talk about my past and present listenings in the world of D&B, giving a chronological rundown and background for each of my picks, Adam tries to merge the aesthetically opposite genres of Paradise Garage and Drum & Bass bypicking one of each back to back. Along the way we talk Daft Punk's Filmography, the latest info from Flying Lotus about an upcoming album (and break off into a tangent about FlyLo as a whole, particularly his sound evolution and what's what with Brainfeeder), as well as asking what exactly makes 'Liquid' Drum & Bass?

Tracklist:
Intro:
Dom & Roland - Aliens

Claude’s picks:
Soichi Terada - Time Station
E-Z Rollers - Movin' On
Omni Trio - First Contact
Chase & Status - Take Me Away
Netsky - Let's Leave Tomorrow

Adam’s Picks
Beard In Dust & Arsenaii - Hey Hey
Lemon D - This Is LA
Caroll Williams - Have You For My Love
Tango - Understanding
MCB - Time Is Right

Outro:
Everything But The Girl - Blame (Fabio Remix)

Show Notes:
The Moving Shadow mix I was talking about, 01.1, is up on youtube in full, the use of First Contact as the intro hypes me up till this day. And the adaption with a slightly different tracklist and the Afro-Carribean MC that I mentioned being featured in GTA III as MSX FM can be found there too, despite being set in the USA, it does a fantastic job of capturing the feel of a psuedo-pirate radio station, down to the slightly naff audio quality on the MC's mic.

If anyone's really interested in hearing the (admittedly subtle) differences between the release version of Time Station and the in-game one, here's two videos for each version: The released "Originape Soundtracks" version and the in-game one (I could only find this half hour loop unfortunatley). The difference is more pronounced on other tracks from the game, for example the main synth on Crabby Beach is almost completely different. Whether that's a compression to fit on the game disc issue or Terada just re-recorded it I don't know, but interesting nonetheless. I'd love to hear the technical details about the limitations of PS1 audio if I ever get the chance.

The documentary Adam talked about, Jungle Fever, is available online here via Dazed themselves. it features Fabio who remixed the Everything But The Girl track used for the outro, and Grooverider who almost made the cut with my selections, and also has my second favourite mix of the outro track you can find here (though the nly ones I could find are a little different than on the EP: Everything But The Girl - Blame (Grooverider Jeep Mix)

Adam's Twitter bot he mentioned is @garageclassics on twitter, give 'em a follow if you liked what you heard this episode and want your daily dose of more. Twitter is also telling me that Busy P of Ed Banger Records fame follows said bot which makes sense but is still pretty interesting!
And that *should* be that for this week. As I've learned doing these, there may be one or two things I've missed or otherwise forgotten to put in the show notes. If so just stay tuned, I give the episodes a quick run through after the posts go up, and I'll edit this post with updates should I have missed any! That's it until next week, join us once again where Me and Adam will be back with more hot takes and even hotter selections. As always, stay safe and enjoy the music. We'll leave the light on for ya.

Hangin'

Claude Monet - Impression, Sunrise (1873)

Hello, it is a sunny day here in England,it was yesterday too which is why I'm takin' it easy after an eve of merriment and a pretty big fire. So here are some tunes that I am on ATM. Starting with Massive Attack's Weather Storm again, only this time it's slightly ironic cos there's no rain for once.

Here's one I always forget about. Thanks to shuffle tho I get treated to it every now and then and it's a treat. There are some rough patches on Daft Club for sure, but that's to be expected given it's a remix album and all. Thankfully, Romanthony's acoustic take on One More Time isn't among them.

And just for funsies, one of the smooth jazzy drum & bass numbers from the E-Z Rollers' Weekend World. The opening for it is gorgeous for starters and it only keeps it up from there. Suppose you could call it Liquid, but I don't think Liquid Drum & Bass was a thing in '98 when it came out. Anyways I'm off again, enjoy!

Alright

Been a couple of days quiet now, gearing up for going back for my final and 3rd year at uni. Not going as bad as I thought, here's hoping everything all right with you lot. Either way so here's some musical accompaniment for y'all to enjoy.

Andy Warhol - Portrait Of Debbie Harry On An Amiga (1985)

Starting off with house legend Romanthony on Bangalter's Roulé label (which is pretty much all flawless releases). As much as I love the housey vibes of the original, the R&B mix is where the tune really shines.

Normally I associate the Massive lads with their distincly moodier outputs post-Mezzanine, but their debut has some more upbeat tunes to it, from Hymn Of The Big Wheel to the cult classic Unfinished Sympathy there's a fair few. This one is by far and away my favourite though, good cover to boot.

Playing us out is a tune from Apparat that's seen me through some tough times. Like all of Walls, the buildup on this one is pretty intense and the production overall is just gorgeous. The last quarter of the track is a definite highlight I'd recommend checking out the album if you dig this, it's easily one of my all time favourites.

Ilictronix wingman series: part threesome

Awwww yeah that's right y'all, light the candles and dim the lights because your favorite wingman is back. It's a new year so start it off right by throwing it down to the sexiest tracks yet.

First up is a track from Chicago locals, The O'My's from the album Chicago Style. Honestly you play any cut off this album and that special someone will just melt with ecstasy. The song Girl It's Been Fun is a guaranteed raunchy time. The beat is sparse, the vocals are seductive, and the tempo is slow enough that even the most inexperienced person can set the mood. Perfect for tender, anniversary love making.

Moving on to how couples in the south side of Chicago get down is a great track from Jody. With one EP under their belt and a great lalapalooza performance, this quintet is set for big things. There isn't much to say about this one, so let your loins do the talking.

Wanting to seduce the sexy hood rat in your life? Look no further than Chicago rapper KIT. The track Fuck You is deliciously explicit. Makes the perfect soundtrack for the codeine fueled orgy you will have while listening to this.

Live in the suburbs and want something more family friendly? Artist Rhye has you covered. Open is a great name for this one because it's a bonafide leg spreader. You can easily play this one in front of the children your going to make to this.

Remember be safe!

Ilictronix: wingman edition part 2

Hey everyone, Adam here acting as your holiday wingman with the goal of getting you all something extra for the holidays.  So grab that mistletoe, get someone drunk on eggnog and get busy with these tracks.

Let's just start it real filthy with a track from the new R. Kelly album Black Panties. No introduction is necessary for the Pied Piper as his discography speaks for itself. This album could be his sexiest one yet with tracks like; Marry The Pussy, and Show Ya Pussy. The intro song Legs Shaking features Ludacris who delivers a verse that calls back to his own track, Fantasy. Black Panties is out December 10th. Should be used by people who posses extreme game.

Next up we have Swedish producer Markus Enochson with the track "Love Is On The Way". It's a great blend of Swedish pop and American r&b. The vocals feel like sweet nothings are being whispered into your ear. A panty dropper for sure.

For all you indie couples who don't want to throw it down but make tender love, here's something just for you from Incan Abraham. A warm track for couples who "love each others souls".  It still sets the mood and gets the job done with a romantic deserted island vibe.

Since this is the holiday wingman guide, the XX's cover of Last Christmas is next. I swear everything this group touches turns into the ghost of sexy time past, and this cover is no exception. Probably the most in your face Jamie XX has ever produced but it's still a sultry take on a cheesy song. Its a great tune to play when you're double dipping with your previous fling.

If all else fails there's Mannheim Steamrollers God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman. It's old school, but for generations people have been getting "comfort and joy" during the holidays to this Christmas album and you should too. Heck turn it into a Christmas tradition, I know I have!

Remember wrap your candy canes with a stocking and happy holidays!

Introductions are in order.

Not to sound like a cheesy online dating ad but hi, my name is Adam and I'm happy to be here! I've been an avid reader of this blog for years now and I'm proud to start contributing. I just moved to Chicago so I'm excited to share with you some fresh tracks coming out of this area, along with some of my personal favorites.

The music scene has certainly changed since I've joined this blog. Who would've thought that the electro house craze of 07' would keep growing and eventually hit the mainstream airwaves! That producers would get the recognition that they have today and people like Hudson Mohawke would be making beats for Kanye west! Could anyone predict that electronic artists and rappers would join together for a "golden era" of hip hop? We are living in a new age of connectivity and artistic expression and I'm excited to join in the ride with all if you.

So instead of killing myself finding a track that is my "thesis". I've decided to just share one of my favorite tracks this week from artist Kelela. This free mixtape dropped pretty recently and the opener is by far the best cut on the album. I love this track, from the opening synths to the cool delivery of the vocals. It's hard not to fall in love when the chorus hits and the track goes barebones with that haunting synth line.
