It Must Be Tuesday

Slightly off kilter schedule has been corrected, just one day out of the usual sched now! But as I said last time I found some time to dedicate to a full post, so here we go. Words and tunes as usual in a sec.

Peter Blake - Tuesday (1961)

As you've probably come to expect by now, a lot of chill things going on this time. Fell back in with Golden Boy's one and only debut LP again, an in between all the pop meets electroclash and house stuff on there is this. Even though I can't jive with minimal a good 80% of the time, I'll be damned if this track isn't absolutely gorgeous once in a while.

I'm massively behind on all things Tellier too which is an absolute shame because I love most of the man's backcatalogue. Here's a surpisingly loungy number from Politics, a far cry from the sexy time electronics of Sexuality that came after.

Anneli Drecker has also been standing in as my muse for the past couple days. Ever since hearing her on Röyksopp's Sparks all those years ago I've been a fan, this week her live version of Sparks and this from Junior have been doing it for me. Not to discount the 'sopp boys' production either, which is also top notch here.

Mund'y

Took the weekend off as usual, thought I'd post again to make up for me absence. No real theme today, just some tunes I picked out I've not heard in a while, prep yer ears after you get your usual dose of eye candy below.

Takashi Murakami - Chaos (1999)

Put away Netsky's debut for a long time, only so many times you can hear them fourteen tracks without getting sick and his newer stuff has taken a backseat. Still I'm a sucker for pitched down vocals (hence my love for The Knife and such), and I'd forgotten this one completely.

Imagine my surprise when flicking through a professional video magazine for research and I see Tellier's video for Look listed. I've seen it before, it's 4 minutes of rotoscoped butt walkin'. If I can find me a job when I get out of University that lets me do that for cash I don't think I'll ever doubt my choices again. Oh yeah, the tune's pretty sweet too.

Also looked into Pfadfinderei, the collective responsible for all things Modeselektor and Moderat. Which led me back to long time pal of them two Apparat. I really need to pick up more of his stuff, I adore Walls and it's lovely blend of atmospheres, but after the new Moderat record I'm itching for more.

Le Lounge Redux

Edward Hopper - New York Movie (1939)

Today I got to hang out in the gallery space I'll be exhibiting in tomorrow, and it's pretty sweet in all honesty, full of salvaged old leather sofas from the old brewery building that it used to be and with an added bar I was digging the vibe. While I waited I thought I'd set the mood and went looking for more loungy vibes, kicking off with a little something from Sebastien Tellier.

And then things got real moody, I recently put Portishead's debut back in my playlists just in case I needed some somber accompaniment courtesy of Beth Gibbons and friends. The album isn't as depressive as I remember it being though, here's one of the more upbeat tunes from Dummy, It Could Be Sweet.

And finally, a little more trip hop stuff from UNKLE back when DJ Shadow was still involved. It sets a lovely mood with its unrelenting drums and Shadow's brilliant sampling work scattered throughout and I couldn't think of a better summary of the album, I highly recommend checking it out.

Electronic Lovin'

Well, it's that fateful day again. Lucky I went out the night before so now I have some video editing and some stuff to write up for Uni then huh? Regardless I'm gonna drop some tunes on you because I like procrastinating more than work!

HudMo lays down another of his annual slow jams mixes just in time for the 14th, not your conventional mix by any stretch of the means, apart from Mohawke dropping in some of his beloved gunshots here and there get ready for quarter of an hour worth of slow jams!

And some mo' selections from my catalogue for you. First is Sebastién Tellier with a bit from his fittingly titled Sexuality that has the honor of being produced by Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of everyone's favourite french house duo Daft Punk.

I'll throw in my favourite remix too, Kavinsky's touch on the opening track from Sexuality is just brilliant, the intro to it is almost perfect. And fits right in with the rest of the album's sound quite comfortably unlike some of the other remixes, which is something I like a lot.

And finally, a couple of tunes from Canadian funk maestros Chromeo. Fancy Footwork is where they started to nail the sound they were going for, and it reflects in the explosion in popularity around that LP in comparison to their first. Here's an under appreciated gem from Fancy Footwork

And I'll end it with the final tune from that album, and something that wouldn't sound too out of place on HudMo's Slow Jams tape up there, but with a little more of a funk vibe to it. Make sure you stay tuned till the end to hear the bonus reprise of Tenderoni!

Le Magicien in Pig City

Hi there

Let's start with a song I heard on the radio a few days ago, and it blew my mind, I had no idea who either the artist or the remixer were, but I knew one thing, I was going to like them.

The Magician is back with something awesome, a remix of Sebastien Tellier's new track Cochon Ville!

Stephen stays true to himself and throws 80's synths and nice kicks all over Tellier's voice.

And because there's never enough of Stephen's sweet synths, here is another remix he made during March.

Enjoy

Freaky Frequencies

As I'm sure you've seen from my other Pick 'N Mix posts, I have a soundtrack for almost everything. And this October is no different, I have an assortment of tunes to make you dance, and some to creep you out. Let's begin :)

I'll start with the electro first, Oizo delivers with the original version of pourriture, not necessarily a Halloween song but fits the bill quite well with it's screechy guitars and haunting vocals. I'm also using it for my Zombie movie I'm doing at college, so there's that too!

This one earns it's place on the list simply because it samples old zombie flicks, what more can you ask for at this time of year, eh? There's a surprising lack of samples like that actually, I sense a gap in the market! I will team up with someone and create Progressive Zomstep House! any takers?

Next up is a track I heard best described as "the theme to the most messed up and awesome game show ever". Sébastien's weird combo actually works out pretty well, it's catchy as all hell despite sounding incredibly cheesy at the beginning.

And whats Halloween without thriller? 'cept this ain't the thriller you know, it's remixed by our man La Roche. 'nuff said.

One late addition that came up as I was writing, one of my recent favourite tracks - a real downbeat number from Fever Ray, for those of you who want a more ambient night :).

For the finale, one track that will genuinely creep you out. I'm not going to say much other than if you need some sounds for freaking people out, this is the track to do it with. (fun fact: Gwely Mernans translates to "Death Bed") also, if you want more creepy stuff from AFX check out Hankie from the Warped series.

sorry for the huge gap, been bogged down with coursework and stuff, you know how it is. (not as bad as being a Chilean miner, mind) This means I won't be as regular sometimes, but now I should be back to my old schedule (for a while). Warped will continue after this post, but for now, just be glad I finally got something up. :P Define 'Regular' -Claude Van Foxbat
