Replacement Service

Apologies for the massive delay, as some of you might know I work in a university and we're currently manning the battlestations for the return of the students next week. In an effort to remedy that (and the future delays that will inevitably happen) I'm writing and scheduling a ton of posts now and this week to hopefully see us through. The submission system I had in place had an unfortunate hiccup, despite having my DMs set to open, I'd gotten a DM but twitter didn't tell me for screening reasons. Surprisingly forward thinking for a company as lackadaisical about harassment as twitter but I digress. First up is a little something I missed from Celadon City about a month ago, a remix of a one James Deen (which you should be careful about googling if you're at work). It's a lovely injection of warmth in these waning days of summer. It's not tagged with any specific genre but if you've heard the past few times I've posted some Celadon City, you should know you're in for some smooth goodness.

And finally the screened tune I mentioned above. Just as a quick aside, like I said I had no idea I'd even gotten a DM and only saw once Jean Sean tweeted me to say so. If something similar happens to you I'd suggest you do the same on the off chance it gets caught in the spam filter. Anyway, this one came to me tagged as trap, which I must admit isn't my genre of choice but I've clearly been out of the loop for some time because this is pretty far from what I used to hear in that vein. Between that and the number of names credited for the remix I was hesitant at first, but it turns out this is the exact opposite of a 'too many cooks' situation and once again making me slightly guilty for judging beforehand. Things get pretty bombastic around the 2 minute mark, so I'd recommend hanging on to hear that.

Update 18/9/2017: The tune is out! have a soundcloud player!

Submithub Roundup Vol. 6

Back again with another round, normally I don't pay attention to the artist namedrops in the tags because in my experience they've been way off base. I gave this one a pass for two reasons, first beign the artist namedrop was Little Drgon and I don't think I've seen anyone else do that and second is that they're Swedes, which is home to some of my all time favourites including the aforementioned Little Dragon. The tune itself is a lovely listen, there's some lovely smoothness going on underneath that driving beat, and the transition into the second half from the midway breakdown is fantastic. Looks like I've found the means to fill the Au Revoir Simone shaped hole in my collection.

Some undestated art for the next one, which is quite fitting given the intro. Another smooth addition to this post too, quite catchy when the chorus hits for sure and makes me perhaps a little nostalgic for BBC Radio 1 circa 2009 or so. After listening to the original and this I feel like it'd be nice to give it the All Is Full Of Love treatment Björk did back in '99 and have a bunch of varied takes on the same tune, Tanis' vocal contributions seem like they'd fit that model well.

Speaking of nostalgia, Dr. Snus here is prescribing me another replacement dose for Pretty Lights this time, only this time with more shelf wobbling sine waves in the mix. I have a pretty mixed opinion about the Pretty Lights album this reminds me of, Filling Up The City Skies, they're both going for the same kind of sound, but I think Snus' is more cohesive overall. A few very very minor complaints with it, I feel like the ending fade being a little long for one, and I'd like to hear a little more of the instrumental experimentation going on but like I said very minor. A promising introduction regardless, and another one to follow on my books.

The Submithub Roundup, Vol. 5

After a long absence, the submithub roundup is back and oh boy do we have a reet backlog to work through. There was a whole batch of things tagged indie pop which isn't an issue, but imagine my surprise when the next one comes on. I'd call it hip hop myself but let's not get down that genre rabbit hole, the opening sample had me right away and it's contrast with the main beat is a joy to listen to. AUTOMatic says that " "Speak To Me" addresses the attitude of hip-hop being a disposable art and is an anthem for starving artists everywhere. ", and I always got time for things that deal with that kind of issue, it's applicable to many genres in the age of the bedroom producer after all, but that's a topic for another day.

Another dubiously tagged one this time, with yet another gorgeous intro. As the soundcloud tags say, it's a bit of a mixed bag between dubstep, trap and the like. It's certainly an interesting take on them for sure, I had mixed feelings about it until around 1:30, that break is sublime in of itself, and the comeback into the autotuned/vocoded verses is nicely done too. I'm not too sure that the vocal treatment works hand in hand with the instrumentation, there's nothing *wrong* with it as-is, but I do feel like they'd be more at home on something that sounds a little more like DMX Krew. They're only a small part of the tune though, and other than that small nitpick it's very well put together especially in the last couple of minutes which is chock full of unique sounds.

And finally, something spooky just in time for all hallow's. Takes a little while to get going this one, but I'm glad I stuck through it. Chelsey herself is reminding me of Nicola Kuperus from ADULT. something fierce in her delivery, and the song itself is reminding me of the more intense parts of Massive Attack's 100th Window. I'd definitely like to see them tackle something like 100th Window or The Knife's Silent Shout in future, the slightly menacing side is already there after all. Certainly one of the more unique things we've had submitted, and another act I'll be keeping my eye on.

Complications...

We've been hit with a wave of DCMA's recently, most notably on some of the Warped History posts focusing on Aphex Twin. I was actually considering making them stream-only a while back because I'm proud of 'em and want em to be read forever, and now I will!. As of right now, I have put the entire Warped History series in stasis. But once I edit all the posts to be stream only they'll come back, it's just gonna take some mind numbing HTML edits to do so. But for now, here is a jumbo sized selection from Warp themselves, because I still love 'em to bits.

Soundcloud Roundup

Apologies for being all quiet on my end as of late, I'm enjoying my free time now Uni is done. Anyways I made my rounds on soundcloud again and caught up on some stuff I missed. Leading e chrge is HudMo who dropped his second LP recently. Now I haven't listened to it yet, and even if I had I don't consider myself the leading source on HudMo anyways, but even so I am in love with this tune he's put up. I needed more sugary sweet anthem-style synths in my life since taking fellow Glaswegian Rustie's Glass Swords out of rotation again.

And catching up with a bloke I found on reddit a while back, dug deep in his 'cloud and found this. Like he says it's less of a remix and more of a cover of the oiginal, but I think it stands on its own merits. I adore the original track and this is an interesting angle on it for sure.

Digging sounddcloud has been petty great, because thanks to people reposting songs you can go down an infinite rabbit hole of tunes. This is one such case, now I may be biased considering my love for hip hop instrumentals, but I think this one's pretty neat. My only complaint is I ain't really feeling the intro but I stop caring once the main body of the song hits.

Working For The Weekend

After spending the last couple of days wrestling with a website that seems to hate chrome with a passion, I should really take the weekend off, but I can' be doing that because I have deadlines to meet so that's gone out of the window. Luckily I've had time between renders to catch up on what's been happening out in the music world, specifically with my long time label romance Warp.

New Squarepusher first! From upcoming LP Damogen Furies which has killer artwork. Given his most recent albums I wasn't sure what to expect. Not in a bad way mind, just not sure what style he'd be doing this time. I was expecting to hear some more of the Z-Machines in there but they aren't on this track at least. It starts off pretty Squarepusher-esque but some synths come in later which give me a lick or two of Glass Swords-era Rustie. And I'm perfectly fine with that.

The new HudMo's been blowing up a ton too. I'll be honest and say that I've never been a fan of his trap direction (but I did like 100HM so there's that), but that intro had me VERY interested. I'm diggin' this track a ton, Irfane who you may recognise from Breakbot's releases lends his talents to the track and makes a treat to listen to.

While I was out.....

Oh hey, it's good to be back! Finals are done, I'm all caught up with my listening list and down to clown. Wow the ending to this year has been absolutely stacked with great releases and our end of the year lists are gong to be so hard to make. Until then, here are some of my favorite tracks I've been listening to.

With the re-release of GTA V its been fun to go back and listen to Flying Lotus station FLYLOFM and the remastered version has some new unreleased tracks. One of my favorites from this mix was an exclusive from Clams Casino - Crystals. This is one of the busiest bangers I've come across especially from someone like Clams.

I am really hit and miss on Acid but this newest release from Daniel Avery's titled Drone Logic was really close in changing my mind. One of the best and danceable cuts form this album was All I Need, I love the juxtaposition of the kick drum and the synth thats just slathered in reverb. The vocals are deliciously sexy especially mid track when a voice demands that you "taste it"

Jon Hopkins absolutely blew me away with his album Immunity so I'm thrilled that he is in Japan recording a new album. In the mean time he dropped a stellar essential mix along with this small EP that feature "Asleep Version" remixes on some of immunities best tracks. The standout is Form By Firelight and it features vocals from Raphaelle Standell.

This next one was tough, I want to hate Ariel Pink and write him off as blog fodder but ill be dammed his newest album Pom Pom had some pretty interesting ideas that kept me coming back.

Worlds Fair is a rap collective from Brooklyn and their work so far has been pretty solid and sounds almost like something the Pro-Era crew would put out if they weren't stuck up their on asses. Anyways this is from their mixtape B.o.t.p.

I'm sure you all have seen a decent amount of hype for Andy Stott's new album faith in strangers and honestly its all true. I actually first heard of Andy fairly recently on Matthew Prain's mix he did a couple of months ago. I was absolutely lost in this album and after I heard this track I was instantly hooked. There is a lot to love with this one, the brooding baseline and a post apocalyptic synth line and those eerie vocals make this one of the best of the year.

Working On The Weekend

Watch Captain Earth
NEW TRACKS!

Starting us off today is a really smooth remix of the track "Till Sunrise" by Goldroom. Pacifico took the song and turned it into an evening at the beach. Tenouttaten, excellent work

Next up we have another remix, this time by Edmonson for the Seb Wildblood track "Hunney"

I'm a sucker for beautiful voices, and Zella Day definitely has a beautiful voice, check out "Compass"

last but not least, i will share a track from one of my favorite artists right now, Makonnen, dude has been blowing up in Atlanta and recently got a Drake feature on his song "Tuesday" but this is not Tuesday.

Enjoy!

Up In The Clouds

I reall need to start hanging on Soundcloud more, I miss so much stuff by not keeping up with it it's unreal. Have a dump from my latest travels into the sky of sound. I didn't even realise Knxwledge had a soundcloud, he probably gets good mileage out of it with his usual ~1 minute tunes, heres a sweet one I stumbled upon

Lied a bit with this one, I actually saw it go live, meant to post it and plain forgot. HudMo finally released his tune 100HM that I heard a ton on the streets of Los Santos thanks to Flying Lotus. The release is a bit slower than the one in game but I don't mind because this is some heavy stuff. Hope it makes an appearance on an upcoming from him!

Cruising his remix playlist I happened upon this, never heard it before but I had to on the title alone. Was a bit meh on it at first but then HudMo hit his stride and made it happen. Awesome sounds in this one, full of that gorgeous organ synth seen on Robin S' Show Me Love that was a big part of the local house scene of my youth.

Mods are away, Post Trap!

Poor Trap, one of the biggest implosions of a genre since "Witch House" had its heyday. What was a fresh take on Dirty South, is now a room filling EDM parody of itself.

With a slew of high profile album releases from the always amazing Warp Records, we could see a return to form for this promising genre. Let's take a look at the year ahead.

Rustie - Green Language

I'm going to be honest I was not too hot on Rustie's Glass Swords when it dropped. I guess my ears were not ready for that type of sugary but heavy hitting sound. I think I finally "Got" Rustie after his Radio One Essential Mix. It was a burst of treble and bass in every direction and things just clicked. He has been busy remixing everyone from Pusha T to Bloc Party and had some production credits on Danny Brown's OLD.

His follow up to Glass Swords sounds to be even brighter and bigger than the debut, Green Language is out August 14th.

Hudson Mohawke - UNTITLED

Hudson Mohawke is one of the biggest names to come out of Warp and the stellar Lucky Me collective, and is quickly becoming a household name.

One of the biggest and most impressive career trajectories in recent memory, hudmo is blowing up in every way possible. Featured on GTA V, signed to Kanye's G.O.O.D. music, his side project TNGHT had its biggest year ever. His solo album should is coming out sometime this year on Warp, and will feature the biggest bangers of the year, guaranteed.

Lunice - UNTITLED

Believe it or not apart from Flying Lotus it was Lunice who really got me into Future Beats, his "Stacker Upper" EP was a breath of fresh air. Hitmane's Anthem was played on repeat all summer along with Fancy Forty, and its remix from Rustie (We have gone full circle) The other half of TNGHT with Hudson Mohawke, Lunice is poised to have a breakout year with his debut. We really don't know much about this one, or if its going to be out on just Lucky Me or Lucky Me and Warp like TNGHT's debut was. All we know is the singles and the rumored tracks are hot hot hot.

Ilictromix: CLAMR

I have been absolutely slammed this week with work so slammed that I'm late on this weeks Ilictromix. Lucky for me, this weeks Ilictromix artist CLAMR has put together a mix so great it made my weekend hustle manageable. Seriously this mix for me has been like a jolt of espresso after an all nighter.

A 24 year old from San Diego, Liam McManus is a Dj/Producer you should all keep on your radar this week. A quick glance at the tracklist reveals a super diverse and eccentric taste in a wide variety of genres. I picked him this week because of his love for a great well thought out set: "In my opinion, this mix really describes me as a person and as an artist. I love low-key but upbeat jams, that can get the party bumping, but can also be listened to on chill night in." When asked what he listens to: "I've been stuck on Neon Indian - Era Extraña, Washed Out - Life of Leisure and Party Supplies - Going Back To New York for a couple months now. I Also just picked up Daft Punk's Discovery on vinyl, so I've been rocking out to that recently as well."

CLAMR has been DJing for 8 years and producing for 7 of them. He told me if he wasn't producing he would be playing ice hockey. I for one am glad he choose Dj'ing.

Tracklist:
1.92109 - CLAMR
2.Cool - Le Youth
3.I Got U - Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones
4.(ID) - CLAMR
5.What Else Is There (Jacques Lu Cont Thin White Duke Mix) - Royksopp
6.Cupcakes - Captain Obvious
7.Digital Love - Daft Punk
8.Going Back To New York - Party Supplies
9.Polish Girl (Dutchie's 'Indie' Breaks Remix) - Neon Indian
10.(ID) - CLAMR
11.NRG - Duck Sauce
12.Stranger (feat. KillaGrahm & Sam Dew) - Skrillex
13.White Tiger - Hippie Sabotage
14.Last Train Home - CLAMR
15.Hover Traps - Rustie
16.Eagle Soul - AWE
17.Mirror Maru - Cashmere Cat
18.All Your Love - Hudson Mohawke
19.Fashion Killer - A$AP Rocky
20.Streamers - Wave Racer
21.(ID) - CLAMR
22.Teion - BeatauCue
23.Thank You - Hudson Mohawke
24.High - CLAMR
25.Long Road Home - CLAMR
26.Black Panther - CLAMR

McManus is also a pretty down to earth guy: "I'm always looking for fresh tracks to throw in my sets, as well as collaborate and network with other producers, DJ's or just music enthusiasts. So feel free to hit me up any time, and unlike some other people in the industry I promise I WILL respond."

Changing Numbers

Happy new year readers! Hope your night is/was more eventful than mine.

My 2013 was average.

I figured I should keep the post 2013 themed, but I really am not with the times. So instead, I've decided to write about 3 Australian artists, with two tracks from each. Should be a decent list. First up is Sydney based producer Spoonty.

Spoonty has been producing his own music for roughly 3 or 4 years, "but it didn't start to sound good until about a year ago" he said. Recently he began working more closely with Nicole Millar, with the two having their debut live show coming up soon.

Spoonty's latest work is a 7 track release titled Infinite Bliss. Available as a digital download or one of ten only cassette tapes, the release holds some great potential. I chose my two favourites, K-Dreamer and Mall Goths. Both hold a strange vibe, I can never decide whether to relax to them or to get up and do something.

The first time I heard the initial synth line from Mall Goths, I instantly thought it was going to be a strange remix of the Dire Dire Docks stage music from Super Mario 64. However, I was wrong. The hip hop inspired beat and dreamy synth instantly just melt together, creating a strange mood.

"Mall Goths got its name because I always enjoyed the term mall goth for scene kids who hang out at shopping centers, and when I wrote the track, the spooky but also weird feeling of it seemed to lend its self well to the name"

My next Australian artist is Flume. In November, he released his debut self titled album, and reached #1 on the ARIA charts with this single. Simple, catchy and easily to dance to.

Less simple, but more danceable, the Hermitude remix of Flumes hit is my preferred mix. Largely due to that arpeggiating synth, the small drop at 1:20 put me into thinking I was listening to a remix by Danger.

The last two artists made 2013 releases, but the final artist made his last, and so far, only release two years back, in 2012. Barry Morgan from the World Of Organs in Adelaide's Sunnyside mall made his debut on Australian music quiz show Spicks & Specks back in 2010, and quickly became "one of the most popular performers on Spicks & Specks in 2010" (Adam Hills). A character created by Stephen Teakle, Mr Morgan uses only one instrument, his 1981 Hammond Aurora Classic. The pure character is enough, but the fact is, he really is a great organ player.

This doesn't count as a song, I just love this video.

When I first got his debut album The Touch of You, I had no idea what to expect. But the first song just amazed me. "He put the boss in Bossa Nova"

One man and a Hammond created this.

Enjoy the tunes, and enjoy the day of recovery that is New Years Day!
